About Museo Casa Natal Picasso

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in 1881 on the second floor of this building on Plaza de la Merced. The building dates from 1872 and is part of the so‑called Casas de Campos, a block built at the initiative of entrepreneur Antonio Campos Garín, designed by Gerónimo Cuervo. In 1983 the house was declared a historic‑artistic monument.

The foundation that runs the museum was created by the city council in 1988, and the entire building was opened to the public in 1998. The exhibition brings together mementos of childhood and family and works by José Ruiz Blasco, the artist’s father, a painter and professor at the Málaga School of Fine Arts.

The foundation’s collection is strong in graphic work, drawing and ceramics. It includes a sketchbook with preparatory drawings for Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), as well as lithographs made between 1930 and 1960, books illustrated by Picasso and other artists, and ceramic pieces created between 1947 and 1969.

Plaza de la Merced, opposite, is one of the liveliest squares in the centre, with bars and terraces.
