About Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga
The museum opened on 24 March 2011 in the Palacio de Villalón, a 16th-century Renaissance building in the historic centre, expanded with two adjacent buildings. The collection comes from Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza.
The focus is on 19th-century and early 20th-century Spanish painting, with special attention to Andalusia. The route begins with old masters in the palace's former chapel, where a Santa Marina by Francisco de Zurbarán stands out.
Next come Romantic landscape and costumbrismo, showing travellers' views of Spain: Moorish architecture, gypsy women, bullfights, festivals and flamenco. Then follow the refined academic painting and naturalist landscape, featuring Mariano Fortuny, Raimundo de Madrazo and Carlos de Haes.
The final section shows the end of the 19th century, when Spanish painting engaged with European trends: Joaquín Sorolla, Darío de Regoyos, Ramón Casas, Ignacio Zuloaga and Julio Romero de Torres. The museum also stages temporary exhibitions.
