About Jardín Botánico-Histórico La Concepción

La Concepción was established around 1855 as a country estate for the couple Jorge Loring and Amalia Heredia, Marqueses de Casa Loring. He was an entrepreneur and deputy; she was interested in botany and archaeology. The two gathered plants from several continents and ancient pieces, such as Roman sculptures and mosaics.

In 1911 the property was bought by the Echevarría family, who expanded the collection of trees and palms. In 1943 the garden was declared an artistic garden, now a cultural heritage site. The city council purchased the area in 1990 and opened it to the public after four years of restoration work.

It covers 55 hectares, 25 of them historic garden, with giant fig trees, centuries-old palms, cycads, lakes, bridges, waterfalls and the Museo Loringiano, a small temple with archaeological items. There are over 2,000 species, including more than a hundred types of palm.

One of the best-known features is the iron pergola covered with wisteria planted in 1857, which usually blooms at the start of the European spring. There are also themed gardens and trails through the Mediterranean woodland with viewpoints over the city.
