About Caminito del Rey
The Caminito del Rey is a footpath attached to the walls of the desfiladeiro de los Gaitanes, between the municipalities of Ardales, Álora and Antequera. The walkway section exceeds 3 km, with an additional 4.8 km of access routes, and reaches 105 metres above the Guadalhorce river.
The original path was built between 1901 and 1905 by the Sociedad Hidroeléctrica del Chorro so workers could reach the plants and transport materials. Engineer Rafael Benjumea later improved the route and the bridge between the two walls of the desfiladeiro.
In 1921, King Alfonso XIII came to inaugurate the Guadalhorce and Guadalteba dams and walked the path. Since then it has been called Caminito del Rey. Over time the old path deteriorated and was replaced by a new wooden walkway, with railings, installed above the original.
The route is done in a single direction, from north to south. It starts near the dams, in Ardales, and ends in El Chorro, near the train station. Along the way you can see the Balconcillo de los Gaitanes, the suspension bridge and the remains of the old walkway just below.
