About MUSAC
The MUSAC, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Castela e Leão, opened in 2005 in the Eras de Renueva neighborhood, a few minutes from San Marcos. It was conceived as a museum of the present, dedicated to art made from the 1990s onward.
The building, by architects Mansilla e Tuñón, won in 2007 the Prêmio Mies van der Rohe, the main contemporary architecture prize of the União Europeia. The main façade is made of glass panels in dozens of colors; the design was taken from the pixelation of a stained-glass window of the catedral de León, linking the Gothic city and the new. Inside, the museum is a sequence of white rooms with skylights.
The exhibitions, generally temporary, bring together Spanish and international artists, with photography, video, installations and painting. The museum’s own collection includes works by contemporary artists from various countries.
The square in front, with the colorful façade, is one of the most photographed spots of the new city.
