About Casa Botines
Casa Botines is one of the three buildings Antoni Gaudí built outside Catalonia, alongside the Palácio Episcopal de Astorga and El Capricho in Comillas. It was commissioned by textile merchants of Catalan origin and built between 1891 and 1892, to serve as a shop on the ground floor and housing on the upper floors. The name comes from the company's founder, Juan Homs y Botines.
It is a work from Gaudí's neo-Gothic phase, with grey stone walls, round towers at the four corners, a pitched roof and windows that evoke a medieval castle. Above the main door, a sculpture of São Jorge slaying the dragon marks the entrance. Gaudí solved the structure with iron columns that leave the floors open, a modern solution for the time.
Since 2017 the building has been the Museu Casa Botines Gaudí. The visit goes through the restored floors, with furniture and details designed by the architect, the history of the construction and a collection of Spanish painting from the 19th and 20th centuries.
On the square in front, a bench features a bronze statue of Gaudí seated, sketching the house, which has become a must-stop for photos.
