About Plaza y Mercado del Fontán
The Plaza del Fontán is one of the oldest and most typical squares in Oviedo's old town. It occupies ground that in the Middle Ages was a lake outside the walls, and it was urbanized in the 17th century with arcaded ground floors, wooden balconies and colorful façades.
Next to the square is the Fontán market, an iron-and-glass covered market that preserves the layout of the late 19th-century market, with stalls selling fish, meat, cured products, Asturian cheeses and vegetables. Around it, on the surrounding streets and the neighboring square, an outdoor market with regional producers takes place on certain days of the week.
The square and nearby streets concentrate bars and restaurants with tables under the arcades, cider houses and Asturian eateries. It's a good place to try the region's cheeses, such as cabrales.
From the Fontán you can walk to the Plaza de la Constitución, where the city hall is, and to the rest of the old town.
