About Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias
The Museu de Belas Artes das Astúrias is the most important art museum in the region. It was inaugurated on 19 May 1980 and occupies three historic buildings in Oviedo's old centre, between the streets da Rúa and Santa Ana, a few steps from the cathedral: the Palacio de Velarde, the Casa de Oviedo-Portal and the extension in the Casa de Solís-Carbajal.
The collection has about 15,000 items, including painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and decorative arts. Highlights include works by El Greco, such as the apostolado, by José de Ribera, by Francisco de Goya, by Juan Carreño de Miranda (a painter born in the Astúrias), Flemish and Italian altarpieces, and works by Pablo Picasso and María Blanchard.
The museum also has a large section of Asturian art from the 19th and 20th centuries, featuring painters and sculptors from the region, and an area of contemporary art.
The visit can be long; it's worth choosing the rooms to focus on.
