About Museo Arqueológico de Asturias
The Museu Arqueológico das Astúrias is housed in the former Benedictine monastery of San Vicente, next to Oviedo Cathedral. The monastery is connected to the city's history: it was one of its earliest nuclei, and the monk Benito Jerónimo Feijoo, a thinker of the Spanish Enlightenment, lived there and served as abbot.
The museum originated in 1845 with the province's monuments commission, was officially created in 1944, and opened in its current location in 1952. It is the main archaeology museum of the Asturias.
The rooms, arranged around the monastery cloister, tell the region's story from prehistory, with stone tools and Asturian cave art, through the castro culture, with gold jewelry, the Roman period with tombstones and mosaics, up to the Middle Ages. One of the highlights is the pre-Romanesque Asturian collection, featuring reliefs, columns and windows taken from 9th-century churches.
This visit helps to understand the monuments on the Naranco and at San Julián de los Prados.
