About Calle Gascona e Fuente de Foncalada

Gascona Street is Oviedo's rua das sidrarias, known as the cider boulevard. Over a few pedestrian blocks there are cider houses with tables on the street, where waiters pour natural Asturian cider by raising the bottle above their heads and keeping the glass low to aerate the drink. The kitchens serve fabada, cachopo, Asturian cheeses and seafood.

At the end of the street is the Foncalada fountain, a potable water fountain from the time of the Kingdom of Asturias. Tradition attributes the work to King Afonso III, but studies of the inscriptions link it to the reign of Afonso II, in the first half of the 9th century. It was built beside an old Roman road, imitating Roman civic works.

It is the only example of a public-use building from the Early Middle Ages preserved in the city and is considered the oldest civil monument in continuous use in Spain. The fountain is small, with a basin and a stone façade bearing the cross and inscriptions. It is part of the pre-Romanesque Asturian ensemble inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1998.

At night the street fills with locals and visitors.
