About Palacio de Miranda-Valdecarzana

The palace of Miranda-Valdecarzana is the most important building in Grado’s historic center. The original structure is medieval, but the Miranda family expanded it in the baroque style in the last third of the 17th century, probably when they received the title of marquises of Valdecarzana. A new renovation came at the beginning of the 18th century, with the east façade.

The palace has three floors. The entrance, at the center of the façade, leads to a monumental staircase and to an interior courtyard with octagonal columns, around which the rooms are arranged. Today the building houses Grado’s public library, the Aula das Metáforas, a library dedicated to poetry, and municipal offices.

Next to it is the chapel of Dolores, which was the palace’s private chapel. It was commissioned in 1713 by Sancho Fernández de Miranda, third Marquis of Valdecarzana, and completed around 1716. The municipality bought the chapel in 1955 and restored it between 1982 and 1997. Today it has no religious use: it hosts plays, concerts and the municipality’s civil weddings.

The palace and the chapel together form a historic-artistic monument.
