About Museo del Pueblo de Asturias
The Museu do Povo das Astúrias preserves and displays the memory of traditional Asturian life. It was created in 1968 at the initiative of the city council and the chamber of commerce of Gijón, inspired by Europe's open-air ethnographic museums, and occupies a 35,000-square-metre park in the La Guía neighbourhood, near the Piles river.
The museum began with hórreos and paneras, the granaries suspended on pillars typical of the Asturies, from the 17th to the 19th centuries, taken from villages around Gijón. Later came two houses of noble families from the 17th and 18th centuries, a peasant house, a trip hammer for working iron, a cider press and an area for the Asturian bowling game.
The museum buildings hold collections of ethnography, old photographs and documents about farm work, fishing and emigration to America. Inside the park there is also the museu da gaita, with instruments from the Asturies and other parts of the world.
The museum is part of Gijón's museum network.
