About Jardín Botánico Atlántico
The Jardim Botânico Atlântico is the botanical garden of the Astúrias and is located in Cabueñes, about 3 km from the center of Gijón, next to the Universidade Laboral. It was inaugurated on 25 April 2003 and was the first of its kind in northwest Spain.
The garden is dedicated to the flora of regions with an Atlantic climate, on both sides of the ocean. The trails showcase plants from the Cantabrian mountain range, meadows and Asturian woodlands, as well as species from other Atlantic regions of Europe and North America, with themed areas about how people use plants, such as the vegetable garden and medicinal plants.
One of the most beautiful parts is the historic garden of the Quinta de la Isla, a former private garden with century-old trees, ponds and shaded paths. The garden also preserves a stretch of woodland on the banks of the río Peñafrancia.
The paths are long and flat, good for a relaxed walk.
