About Cimadevilla
Cimadevilla, or Cimavilla in Asturian, is Gijón's oldest neighborhood. It occupies the peninsula of the cerro de Santa Catalina, which juts out into the Cantabrian Sea between the marina to the west and San Lorenzo beach to the east. The Roman town once stood there, and in the 19th century the neighborhood was the fishermen's quarter, with low houses and narrow streets climbing the hill.
The neighborhood is almost entirely pedestrian and concentrates much of Gijón's monuments. At the entrance is the Plaza Mayor, with arcades and the town hall, open toward the port. Nearby are the Plaza del Marqués, with the palace of Revillagigedo, the clock tower, which houses a small museum about the city's history, and the remains of the Roman wall.
The streets of Cimadevilla, like Rosario and Vicaría, have colorful houses, balconies and many sidrerías, where cider is served with the bottle raised above the head. At night the neighborhood is one of Gijón's nightlife centers.
At the top of the peninsula is the park of the cerro de Santa Catalina, with the sculpture Elogio do Horizonte, and below, by the beach, the Roman baths.
