About Acuario de Gijón
The Aquário de Gijón is located on the praia de Poniente, west of the centre, in the former Cantábrico shipyards. It opened to the public on 10 June 2006.
The exhibition covers about 2,000 square metres, with around 60 freshwater and saltwater tanks and some 250 species, including fish, invertebrates, reptiles, birds and marine mammals. The tanks are arranged by zones, on a journey that starts with Asturian rivers and the Cantábrico coast and continues through the Atlantic, the Caribbean islands, Cape Horn and the Pacific and Indian oceans.
The sharks, in one of the oceanic zones, are among the most sought-after animals. The aquarium also has a rehabilitation area for marine mammals and reptiles found injured on the coast.
It is a popular option for families, especially on rainy days. The praia de Poniente opposite has imported sand along the shore and a promenade that links to the marina and Cimadevilla.
