About Museo Nao Victoria
The Museo Nao Victoria is located on the shore of the Estreito de Magalhães, north of Punta Arenas. It is a private open-air museum made up of full-size replicas of vessels linked to the history of navigation in the far south.
The main exhibit is the Victoria, the carrack of Fernão de Magalhães's fleet that completed the first circumnavigation after crossing the strait in 1520. Visitors can go aboard, walk the deck and descend to the holds to understand how dozens of men lived in such confined space.
The collection also includes the James Caird, the lifeboat from Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition, the schooner Ancud, which took possession of the strait for Chile in 1843, and the HMS Beagle, the ship on which Charles Darwin traveled through Patagonia.
Panels tell the story of each voyage in Spanish and English. The site is very exposed to the strait's wind, and the visit is largely outdoors.
