About Volcán Osorno

Volcán Osorno is the mountain that appears in almost every photo of the region. At 2,652 meters it has an almost perfect cone, covered with snow and ice at the top year-round. It lies northeast of Puerto Varas, between Lago Llanquihue and Lago Todos los Santos, and its last recorded eruption was in 1835, observed from a distance by Charles Darwin.

The most used access starts from Ensenada, a small village at the eastern tip of Llanquihue, about 47 km from Puerto Varas. From there a paved road climbs the slope to the Centro de Ski y Montaña Volcán Osorno. In winter the ski runs operate; the rest of the year the lifts take visitors to viewpoints where you can see the lakes, Calbuco and, on clear days, Tronador and Puntiagudo.

Near the base of the ski center there are short trails across the volcanic rock, such as the one that leads to the secondary craters, where ancient lava left reddish rocks. The landscape resembles a high-altitude desert, treeless, with strong winds and cold even in summer.

The ascent to the summit is a technical climb, involving ice and crevasses, and should only be done with an accredited mountain guide and proper equipment. For most visitors, the road and the lifts are enough to see the volcano up close.

Before you go

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

Half a day from Puerto Varas, including the drive, the lifts and a short walk. Combined with the Saltos del Petrohué, it fills a full day.

Best time

Clear summer days, from December to March, usually offer the widest views of the lakes. The snow season generally runs from June to September, when the runs operate. With low cloud the summit disappears and the trip becomes pointless: check the forecast the day before.

How to get there

From Puerto Varas follow Ruta 225 to Ensenada and take the road that climbs the slope to the ski center. By car the trip takes about an hour. Local agencies run tours with transport, usually combined with the Saltos del Petrohué.

Tip

Bring a jacket, a warm hat and sunglasses: up there the temperature is much lower than on the shore and the sun reflects off the snow. In winter, check whether the road requires tire chains before driving up.
