About Caleta Angelmó

Caleta Angelmó is a small bay about 3 km west of Puerto Montt's center, facing Isla Tenglo. It originated as a port at the end of the 19th century and is still an embarkation point for boats to Chiloé and the southern fjords. For visitors, it is the liveliest place in the city.

Along Avenida Angelmó stretches the craft fair, offering knitted garments and wool hats from Chiloé, wooden items, basketry and copperware. At the end of the avenue is the market, with stalls selling fish, shellfish, dried seaweed and smoked products. On the upper floor, the cocinerías—small counter restaurants—serve seafood dishes to passersby.

The most ordered dish is curanto, a Chiloé tradition that combines shellfish, meats, potatoes and milcao, a potato bread. In the original method everything is cooked in a hole in the ground with hot stones and leaves; in the cocinerías it is prepared in a pot. Paila marina, a seafood broth, is another option.

At the pier, small boats make the short crossing to Isla Tenglo, from where you can see the town. Sea lions and birds often appear near the fishermen's stalls waiting for fish scraps.
