About Museo Regional de Ancud
The Museo Regional de Ancud is located on Libertad street, on the Plaza de Armas, next to the cathedral. It was opened in 1976 from the collection of the Salesian priest Audelio Bórquez, who became its first director, and today belongs to the Servicio Nacional del Patrimonio Cultural.
The rooms tell the history of the archipelago from the canoeing peoples and hunter-gatherers to the era of the missions, the Spanish batteries and rural Chilote life. The main collections are archaeology, basketry and textiles, with pieces made of wool, fibers and wood.
In the courtyard there are two highlights. One is the skeleton of a large whale that beached near Ancud. The other is the replica of the schooner Ancud, the vessel that sailed from the town in 1843 to take possession of the Strait of Magellan in the name of Chile.
From the museum terrace the view opens onto the gulf of Quetalmahue and the Lacuy peninsula. The building also has a small cinema room and an amphitheatre used for cultural activities.
