About Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña
The Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña, known as MAAM, is located in downtown Salta. Its exhibitions address Andean peoples and the practices carried out in the mountains during the Inca period. The museum is housed in a historic building facing Plaza 9 de Julio.
The discovery of the Niños del Llullaillaco, made in 1999 on the summit of the volcano, guides an important part of the collection. Objects associated with the archaeological context and explanations about the high‑altitude environment help to understand the research. The route requires reading and attention, as well as a careful look at the display cases.
The conservation of the collection determines what is presented in each room. Plan your visit during an appropriate period of the central circuit and follow the photography and circulation rules indicated on site. For families, it's worth talking beforehand about the archaeological and religious content addressed in the exhibitions.
