About Severikirche
The Severikirche, the church of São Severo, stands next to the cathedral on the Domberg and together they form Erfurt's best-known ensemble. The current building began in the 1270s; the main altar was consecrated in 1308 and the church was largely completed around 1332.
The interior is a five-aisled hall church with an almost square plan, a form that was uncommon for the period. The three pointed towers, rebuilt after the great fire of 1472, define the Domberg's silhouette as seen from afar. One of the towers houses the Osanna, from 1474, the largest bell in the church complex.
The main highlight is the sarcophagus of São Severo, the church's patron, with four relief panels made around 1360–1370. The scenes depict episodes from the saint's life and the adoration of the Magi. Dismantled after the 1472 fire, the sarcophagus was reassembled in 1948.
The church is Catholic and cared for by the same association that conserves the cathedral. The visit is shorter than the Dom's, but completes the climb up the staircase.
