About Augustinerkloster
The Augustinerkloster, an Augustinian convent, began to be built in 1277 in the northern part of Erfurt’s old town. It was here that Martin Luther entered as a novice in July 1505 and lived as a monk until 1511. He celebrated his first mass in the convent church in 1507 and returned to preach there in 1521 on the way to the Diet of Worms.
The Church of St. Augustine preserves four 14th-century stained-glass windows. They were removed and stored during World War II and reinstalled in 1947. In February 1945 a bombing hit the convent library and killed 267 people sheltering in the cellar; a place of silence (Ort der Stille) commemorates the victims.
Today the convent belongs to the Evangelical Church and functions as a place of worship, a meeting center and simple accommodation. The guided tour goes through the cloister, the church and the permanent exhibition Frust und Freiheit, about Luther’s religious search and the convent’s role in German democratic history in 1850 and 1989.
The church is usually open during the day, and the guided tour is the most complete way to see the convent.
