About Schloss Stolzenfels
Stolzenfels sits on a slope of the left bank of the Reno, about 5 km south of Koblenz, already within the Romantic Rhine Valley, a World Heritage site. On the same spot there was a medieval castle of the archbishops of Trier, which collected tolls from riverboats and was destroyed by French troops in 1689.
The ruins were given by the city of Koblenz in 1823 to the Prussian crown prince, the future king Frederico Guilherme IV. He commissioned a reconstruction in the romantic taste of the time, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and the works were completed in 1842. The result is a neo‑Gothic castle with towers, battlements and a chapel, conceived as a summer residence.
The visit is guided and tours the rooms with 19th‑century furniture, paintings and weapons, the chapel and the pergola garden, with views over the river. It is one of the most complete examples of Rhine romanticism, the fashion that turned medieval ruins into fairytale castles in the 19th century.
The path to the entrance is a climb of about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the riverside road, through a wood.
