About Marktplatz Cochem
The Marktplatz is the centre of Cochem's small old core, just below the Reichsburg. The town appears in documents from 866 and was granted city rights in 1332. It was heavily affected in 1689, in the same war that destroyed the castle, and was rebuilt afterwards.
The building that stands out is the former administrative seat of the Electorate of Trier, today the Rathaus (town hall), in baroque style, with an entrance from 1739. In the middle of the square is the Martinsbrunnen, a fountain dedicated to St Martin; there was already a fountain in the market in 1459, and the current figure dates from the early 20th century. Around it, half-timbered houses with painted facades house cafés, wine shops and restaurants.
From the square, narrow lanes climb toward the castle and descend to the Moselpromenade, the riverside promenade, where the tourist boats dock. Boats usually operate from March or April to October, with departures for short trips and for neighbouring villages on the Mosela.
The centre has sections with restricted car traffic at certain times, which makes the streets quieter for pedestrians. In winter the river sometimes rises and floods the lower part of the town; marks of old floods can be seen on some walls.
