About Klein-Venedig
Klein-Venedig, Little Venice, is the stretch of fishermen's houses on the east bank of the left arm of the Regnitz, just downstream from the Altes Rathaus. The houses, mostly half-timbered, were built from the 17th century onward, attached to each other with their rear facing the water.
Because there was little space for a yard, the fishermen used the long wooden balconies to hang nets and equipment. Boats are still moored in front of the houses. The area has suffered floods, such as in 1784, and today a weir upstream helps control the water level.
The houses are private residences and are best seen from the opposite bank via the Am Leinritt path, or by boat on river cruises. In August, during the Sandkerwa, Bamberg's biggest folk festival, the quarter usually hosts stalls and the Fischerstechen — a contest in which men in long boats try to knock each other into the water with poles.
