About Panometer Leipzig
The Panometer occupies a brick gasholder built in 1910 in the Connewitz district, in the south of Leipzig. It stored gas for the city until 1977 and is now a listed monument. The name combines the words panorama and gasometer.
Since 2003 the artist Yadegar Asisi has exhibited 360-degree panoramas there — giant images that cover the entire interior wall of the cylinder, about 30 metres high. Visitors climb a tower in the middle of the building and view the scene from several levels, with light and sound that simulate the passage of the day.
Each panorama stays on display for several years and is accompanied by an exhibition on the subject, with explanations about the research and the creative process. Themes have ranged from natural landscapes to historic cities.
The building is a little outside the central circuit, but the visit pairs well with the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, which is in the same southeastern area of the city.
