About Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen
The Pfahlbaumuseum in Unteruhldingen is an open-air archaeological museum with 23 houses reconstructed on piles in the lake. They recreate stilt-villages from the Stone Age and the Bronze Age, based on excavations carried out in the region.
The museum opened in 1922 and is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. In addition to the houses, it has two exhibition buildings with more than a thousand original finds from the lake villages, such as tools, pottery and food remains.
The prehistoric pile-dwelling sites around the Alps form a UNESCO World Heritage that includes sites on the Lago de Constança, and the museum is the place to understand that heritage, since the original traces lie under water or soil.
The visit follows wooden boardwalks between the houses, with explanations of how people fished, cooked and built. It is an outing that appeals to both children and adults.
