About Niederburg

The Niederburg is the oldest part of Constança’s centre. It lies below the Münster, descending to the Seerhein, the stretch of the Reno that links the two parts of the lake. Craftsmen, fishermen, small traders and the cathedral canons lived there.

The lanes are curved, a layout that made attacks more difficult. Many medieval houses still bear the house name and year on their façades. Niederburggasse has 15th-century houses, and Rheingasse leads to the old bridge over the Reno and the Rheintorturm, a wall tower.

The neighbourhood houses the former Dominican convent of Zoffingen, from the 13th century, the Spitalkellerei, a cellar linked to an old hospital, the Theatre of Constança and the baroque Christuskirche. Stained-glass, bookbinding and violin workshops operate in old houses.

At night, the Niederburg is the place for the Weinstuben, wine taverns in historic rooms, serving regional dishes and lake wines.
