About Insel Mainau

Mainau is an island of about 45 hectares in the arm of the lake called Überlinger See, connected to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge. It belongs to Constança and is managed by a foundation created in 1974 by Count Lennart Bernadotte of the Swedish royal family, whose family still lives on the island.

The garden changes throughout the year: tulips and other bulb flowers in spring, roses in early summer and dahlias in late summer and autumn. The arboretum, begun in the 19th century by Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, has trees from several continents. There is also a tropical butterfly house, a palm greenhouse and areas for children.

At the top of the island stands the Baroque palace of the Teutonic Order, built in the 18th century by Johann Caspar Bagnato, with the church beside it. From the terrace you can see the Überlinger See and, on the opposite shore, the Meersburg and Unteruhldingen region.

The island is open year-round. In winter the gardens are quieter, but there are exhibitions in the greenhouses and, for part of November and December, a Christmas lights walk with a separate ticket.
