About Philosophenweg
The Philosophenweg runs halfway up the slope of the Heiligenberg on the north bank of the Neckar, about 2 km long. The name comes from the professors and students of the university who strolled there. Because the slope faces south and is sheltered from the wind, the path has gardens with plants that don't normally grow at this latitude.
The most used ascent is the Schlangenweg, a zig-zag stairway trail of steps and stone walls that starts just after the Alte Brücke. Another option is to climb from the Neuenheim neighborhood on the west side, which offers a gentler gradient.
Along the way there are benches and viewpoints with the city's most photographed view: the Alte Brücke, the Altstadt and the red castle on the opposite slope. In the middle is the Philosophengärtchen, a small garden with plaques commemorating poets and thinkers associated with Heidelberg. Trails from the path lead up to the top of the Heiligenberg, with ruins of a medieval monastery and an amphitheatre built in 1935.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
1 to 2 hours, including the ascent via Schlangenweg, the walk and the return across the Alte Brücke.
Best time
Late afternoon, when the sun lights the castle and Altstadt from the front. In spring the hillside gardens bloom. After rain, the Schlangenweg can become slippery.
How to get there
On foot: cross the Alte Brücke, turn right and look for the Schlangenweg entrance on the other side of the road. From the Neuenheim side, take a bus or tram to the stops near the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke and climb up through the neighborhood streets.
Tip
The ascent via Schlangenweg is short but steep. If you have difficulty with stairs, consider climbing from the Neuenheim side and descending via the Schlangenweg. Bring water in summer—there's little commerce along the route.
