About Schlossberg
The Schlossberg rises immediately east of the Altstadt and is the first hill of the Floresta Negra from Freiburg. A castle of the city’s lords once stood on the summit, and in the 17th century the French turned the hill into a fortress. Everything was demolished in 1745, and today walls, gates and ruins remain scattered through the woods.
The shortest ascent starts from the Schwabentor or the Stadtgarten, via trails and steps, taking about 15 minutes to the Kanonenplatz viewpoint, with the classic view of the Münster over the roofs. From the Stadtgarten the Schlossbergbahn also departs, a small funicular that takes about 3 minutes to the top; the passenger operates the cabin themselves.
Higher up is the Schlossbergturm, an observation tower of wood and steel. From the top you can see the city, the Rhine plain, the wine-growing Kaiserstuhl region and, on clear days, the Vosges in France.
