About Münsterplatz

Münsterplatz surrounds the Freiburger Münster on all sides and is the largest square in the Altstadt. From Monday to Saturday, in the morning until early afternoon, it hosts the Münstermarkt. On the north side are regional producers selling fruit, vegetables, cheeses, smoked ham from the Floresta Negra, wines and flowers. On the south side there are stalls with crafts and everyday goods.

The market is also the place for the Lange Rote, a long red sausage served in bread with onions, which has become Freiburg’s street food.

On the south side of the square stands the Historisches Kaufhaus, an old trading house with a dark-red façade, built in the early 16th century, with statues of Habsburg emperors on the façade and arches at ground level. It is now used for events. Nearby, the baroque Wentzingerhaus houses a city history museum, and the buildings rebuilt after 1944 follow the layout of the old houses.
