About Augustinermuseum
The Augustinermuseum occupies the former Augustinian convent in the Altstadt and is Freiburg's main art museum. It opened in 1923 and underwent a long, phased renovation that gave the former convent church a large hall with galleries and natural light.
In the church nave are the original stone sculptures from the Münster, including prophets about 4 metres tall that were once on the tower and were replaced by copies to protect them from the weather. The case of a baroque organ from another regional monastery is also displayed there.
The rooms present medieval and Renaissance painting, with works by Matthias Grünewald, Hans Baldung Grien and Lucas Cranach the Elder, as well as 19th-century painting from the Baden region, such as Franz Xaver Winterhalter and Hans Thoma. The treasury gathers goldsmithing from the 9th to the 18th centuries, and there are medieval tapestries and a large collection of prints and drawings.
