About Lichtentaler Allee

The Lichtentaler Allee began, according to tradition, as a path from 1655 between the market square and the Lichtenthal monastery, founded in the 13th century and still inhabited by Cistercian nuns. Between 1850 and 1870, at the initiative of the family that ran the casino, it was turned into an English-style park along the bank of the Oos stream.

It is about 2.3 km of path, with native and exotic trees, open lawns, iron and stone bridges over the stream, and shaded benches. Along the route are the Theater Baden-Baden, the Museum Frieder Burda, the Staatliche Kunsthalle and 19th-century mansions where kings, aristocrats and artists stayed.

Near the monastery, the avenue ends at the dahlia garden and the Gönneranlage, a rose garden with fountains and pergolas. The Lichtenthal monastery has a church and a chapel open to visitors and a shop run by the nuns.
