About Kurhaus Baden-Baden
The Kurhaus was designed by architect Friedrich Weinbrenner and inaugurated in 1824, with a Corinthian-columned façade facing the Kurpark. From the beginning a casino operated there, gaining international fame from the 1830s onward, when gambling was banned in France and players crossed the Rhine.
The gaming rooms were decorated in the style of French palaces, with chandeliers, gilding and paintings. The Russian writer Fiódor Dostoiévski gambled in Baden-Baden, and the experience entered the novel The Gambler. Besides the casino, the building houses ballrooms and concert halls and a restaurant.
Next to it, the Trinkhalle, from 1842, is a 90-meter colonnaded gallery where visitors used to drink the thermal water. The wall frescoes tell legends of the Baden region. In front of the Kurhaus, the park hosts open-air concerts in summer and the Christmas market, which usually runs from late November until close to Christmas.
