About Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett

Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett has been housed in the Brömserhof since 1975, the former manor of the Brömser knightly family, on Oberstraße just above the Drosselgasse. The medieval house was enlarged in the 16th and 17th centuries and at one time formed part of the town wall.

The collection brings together more than 400 self-playing instruments from the 18th to the 20th centuries: music boxes, barrel organs, automatic pianos, orchestrions that imitate an entire band, and instruments that provided music for ballrooms and cafés before radio and the gramophone.

The visit is guided, lasting about 45 minutes, and the guides operate several instruments along the route. Explanations are usually given in German and English, and there are texts in other languages.

The museum is open from mid-March to December. The Brömserhof itself, with its courtyard and rooms of the old manor, is part of the visit.
