About Palmengarten
The Palmengarten is one of Frankfurt's two botanical gardens and one of the largest of its kind in Germany, covering 22 hectares in the Westend district. It was opened to the public in 1871 by a citizens' society that bought a duke's plant collection.
The greenhouses bring together different climates: the Palmenhaus, the large 19th-century palm house, and the Tropicarium, with rainforest, mangrove, cacti and desert plants. Outside there is a rose garden, areas with steppe and mountain plants, lawns and a lake.
The garden is contiguous with the Botanischer Garten and the Grüneburgpark, forming the largest green area near the city center. In spring and summer the outdoor areas are at their best; in winter the greenhouses are the main reason to visit.
The Palmengarten is open every day, with reduced hours from November to January. At certain times it hosts flower exhibitions and nighttime events with lighting.
