About Museumsufer
Museumsufer means "museum embankment". It is the stretch of the Schaumainkai on the south bank of the Main where a sequence of museums occupies 19th-century mansions and modern buildings. The network that bears this name brings together dozens of museums from Frankfurt and the surrounding area, but its heart is this riverside avenue.
Side by side are the Städel, the city's largest art museum; the Liebieghaus, with sculptures from Antiquity to Classicism in a mansion with a garden; the Museum Angewandte Kunst, of applied arts; the Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, for cinema; the Museum für Kommunikation; and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, for architecture.
On the north bank of the river, also counted as part of the Museumsufer, are the Historisches Museum, about the history of Frankfurt, and the Jüdisches Museum, about Jewish life in the city, by the Main.
The riverside promenade, with lawns and trees, is used for walking and cycling. At the end of August the Museumsuferfest usually takes place, a street festival along both banks. Many museums close on Mondays: check each one before you go.
