About Schrammsteine

The Schrammsteine are a chain of sandstone rocks that stretches several kilometers east of Bad Schandau, within Saxon Switzerland National Park. They form cliffs, towers and narrow gorges, and are a favorite destination for hikers and climbers, who practice rock climbing there following old local rules.

The best-known walk climbs to the Schrammsteinaussicht viewpoint via iron stairways and steps fixed into the rock, between narrow fissures. From the top you can see the Elbe valley, the flat-topped hills of the region and, on a clear day, the ranges on the Czech side. Those comfortable with heights can continue along the Gratweg, a ridge path with exposed sections.

Trails usually start from Postelwitz, on the banks of the Elbe, from the Kirnitzsch valley or from the Ostrau plateau, reachable by the historic Bad Schandau lift. A circuit of the Schrammsteine takes 3 to 5 hours.
