About Historischer Personenaufzug Bad Schandau
The Personenaufzug (passenger lift) of Bad Schandau is a 52-meter steel tower built in the early 20th century and in operation since 1904. It connects the valley near the town center to the Ostrau plateau, which sits atop the cliff.
A footbridge links the top of the tower to the edge of the plateau. Up there are views over the Elbe valley, Bad Schandau and the hills of Saxon Switzerland. The lift was part of an old project to develop Ostrau as a summer resort, from which the houses still seen on the plateau originate.
Besides being an attraction itself, it is the most used shortcut to start hikes toward the Schrammsteine without the initial uphill walk. It runs year-round, with longer hours in summer.
