About Festung Königstein

Festung Königstein is one of the largest hilltop fortresses in Europe. It occupies the 9.5-hectare plateau of a flat-topped sandstone hill, about 240 meters above the Elba, in the town of Königstein. The walls reach 42 meters high and the path along them is about 1.8 km, with views over the valley and the rocks of the Suíça Saxônica.

The fortress belonged for centuries to the rulers of the Saxônia, who used it as a refuge, a treasure store and a state prison. Among the famous prisoners was Johann Friedrich Böttger, the alchemist associated with the invention of European porcelain. It was never taken by force.

Today it is an open-air museum with more than 50 historic buildings. The exhibitions tell the fortress's history, display cannons and soldiers' life, the tunnels and casemates, and the water supply, including a well dug into the rock that is the deepest in the Saxônia.

A panoramic elevator links the arrival area to the plateau, saving the uphill walk. The fortress is open year-round, with shorter hours in winter.
