About Bastei

The Bastei is a cluster of sandstone towers above the right bank of the Elba, between Kurort Rathen and Stadt Wehlen, in the Saxon Switzerland National Park. From the top, about 190 metres above the river, you can see the valley, the bends of the Elba and other rock formations in the area. The site has been visited since the late 18th century and was one of the places that made Saxon Switzerland famous among Romantic painters.

The Basteibrücke is the stone bridge that connects the rocks, built in 1851 on the site of an older wooden bridge. It is 76.5 metres long and spans a gorge of about 40 metres depth. It is the most photographed spot in the park.

Near the bridge there are several viewpoints. The Basteiaussicht, a more recent viewing platform, is wheelchair accessible and is open at any time, unlike the bridge which has steps. Access to the Bastei area and the bridge is free of charge.

Those arriving on foot start from Kurort Rathen, on the banks of the Elba, and climb a trail with steps via the Schwedenlöcher or the main path, among gorges and cliffs. The route is steep but short.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

1 to 2 hours in the Bastei area; 3 to 4 hours if you hike up from Kurort Rathen and return.

Best time

Early morning or late afternoon, to avoid the tour buses and catch the side light in the valley. On summer weekends the place gets very crowded. In autumn, from September to October, the forest changes colour.

How to get there

From Dresden or Bad Schandau, take the S-Bahn S1 to Kurort Rathen, cross the Elba by ferry and walk up the trail in about 30 to 45 minutes. There are also buses from Pirna and Bad Schandau to the Bastei. By car, use the park-and-ride about 3 km away and the shuttle bus, because parking spaces near the Bastei are limited.

Tip

Wear sturdy footwear: there are uneven steps and slippery rocks when it rains. Nearby trails may be closed due to fallen trees or safety works: check the park notices before you go. Respect the fences at the viewpoints.
