About Museum der bayerischen Könige
The Museum der bayerischen Könige occupies a former hotel from the castle-tourism era on the shore of the Alpsee, just a few steps from the Hohenschwangau Ticket Center. The building, in an early-20th-century regional style, belongs to the fund that manages part of the assets of Bavaria’s former royal house, the Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds.
The exhibition tells the story of the Wittelsbachs, one of Europe’s oldest dynasties, from the Middle Ages to the present. The center’s highlight is the Hall of Kings beneath a steel vault, dedicated to Maximilian II, who turned Hohenschwangau into a summer residence, and to Ludwig II, who built Neuschwanstein. There are more than a hundred items, most original, such as costumes, jewelry and court objects.
The side galleries have panoramic windows overlooking the Alpsee, Hohenschwangau and the mountains. The audio guide, available in ten languages, is included with the ticket.
