About Marienbrücke
The Marienbrücke spans the gorge of the Pöllat river, just above Neuschwanstein. The first wooden footbridge was built in the 1840s by order of King Maximilian II, Ludwig II's father. In 1866 it was replaced by the current iron structure, named after Queen Marie, Ludwig's mother.
From the bridge you can see the castle from the side, whole, with the valley and lakes in the background. Just below the bridge the Pöllat waterfall drops about 30 meters. The bridge is a viewpoint independent of the castle: the entrance path to Neuschwanstein does not go through it, and the guided tour takes place even when the bridge is closed.
In winter, with ice and snow, access is often closed for safety. The day's situation is published on the official Hohenschwangau website. In busy months the bridge becomes crowded and there may be a queue to get on it. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
About 20 to 40 minutes on the bridge, depending on how busy it is. Add the time for the climb.
Best time
Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when there are fewer people. Morning light illuminates the castle façade seen from the bridge. From December to March the bridge is often closed for much of the time.
How to get there
From parking lot P4, near the Alpsee in Hohenschwangau, a bus departs that goes up to the viewpoint; from the final stop it's about a 5-minute walk. The bus has no fixed timetable, runs according to demand and only operates when there is no snow or ice on the road. On foot, the ascent from Hohenschwangau takes about 45 minutes.
Tip
If you plan to visit Neuschwanstein inside, buy the ticket before you go up to the bridge: the Ticket Center is down there in Hohenschwangau. After the bridge, the castle is about a 15-minute walk downhill.
