About Museum Barberini
The Museum Barberini occupies the Palácio Barberini, an 18th-century building that Frederick the Great commissioned to be built on the Alter Markt, inspired by the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. Destroyed in the Second World War, the palace was rebuilt with its historic façade and turned into an art museum, founded by entrepreneur Hasso Plattner.
The highlight is the Impressionism collection, one of the largest outside France, with works by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and others. There is a large group of Monet paintings, featuring landscapes and garden scenes.
In addition to the collection, the museum mounts temporary exhibitions throughout the year, ranging from old masters to 20th-century art. The programme includes guided tours in several languages and audio guides for adults and children at no extra cost.
The museum's courtyard opens onto the Alte Fahrt canal, a branch of the river Havel, and the café with a view over the water is a good place for a break. Before entering, bags and coats must be left in the cloakroom or lockers.
