About Unter den Linden
Unter den Linden means 'under the linden trees', the trees planted in the central reservation. The boulevard links the Brandenburger Tor, to the west, with the Schlossbrücke bridge and the Ilha dos Museus, to the east, along a stretch of about 1.5 kilometres. It began as a riding path for princes in the 17th century and became the main avenue of the Prussian capital.
Along it are buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries: the Staatsoper, the state opera; the Humboldt University, where Karl Marx studied and where Albert Einstein taught; the Zeughaus, a former arsenal, today the German Historical Museum; and the Neue Wache, by Schinkel, a memorial to the victims of war and tyranny, featuring a sculpture by Käthe Kollwitz.
On the Bebelplatz, between the opera and the university, a glass plate in the ground reveals an empty library, a work by Micha Ullman. It commemorates the book burning carried out by the Nazis in the square in May 1933. At the intersection with Friedrichstraße, the avenue meets the city's main shopping street.
