About Tempelhofer Feld

Tempelhofer Feld is the area of the former Tempelhof airport, in the south of Berlim, opened to the public as a park in 2010, two years after flights ended. With more than 300 hectares, it is one of the largest open areas inside a major city in Europe.

The airport has a long history. The field was used for military maneuvers and, in the early 20th century, for the first flights in Berlim. The enormous terminal building, in the shape of an arch, was built during the Nazi era. In 1948 and 1949, during the Soviet blockade of Berlim Ocidental, Tempelhof was the centre of the Ponte Aérea de Berlim: American and British planes landed nonstop bringing food and coal for the population.

Today the runways are used for cycling, running, skating and land kitesurfing. On the grass there are community gardens, areas for barbecues and picnics, and space to fly kites. In 2014 residents voted in a referendum to keep the field free of buildings.

The terminal building, next to the park, hosts events and guided tours of areas such as the hangares and the roof; check the schedule before you go. From the field you get a sense of the size of the former airport, with Berlim’s skyline in the background.
