About Prenzlauer Berg

Prenzlauer Berg lies north of the center and used to be part of Berlim Oriental. It largely escaped the bombing of the Second World War, and therefore preserves whole streets of late-19th-century residential buildings with ornate façades and inner courtyards. During the time of the Alemanha Oriental the buildings were poorly maintained and the neighborhood gathered artists and opposition groups to the regime.

After reunification most buildings were restored and the neighborhood changed considerably. Today it is a quiet residential area, with families, tree-lined squares, cafés, bakeries, design shops and restaurants of various cuisines.

The centre of neighborhood life is the square Kollwitzplatz, which hosts a food market on some weekdays. Nearby is the Wasserturm, Berlim's oldest brick water tower, surrounded by a small park. The Kulturbrauerei, a former red-brick brewery, was converted into a cultural centre with a cinema, concert halls and restaurants, and also houses an exhibition about everyday life in the Alemanha Oriental.

The street Kastanienallee, nicknamed "Casting-Allee" by the youth scene, links the neighborhood to Mitte, and at the western edge lies the Mauerpark. At the Gethsemanekirche, the neighborhood church, opposition groups gathered during the 1989 protests that preceded the fall of the Muro.
