About Olympiastadion Berlin
Olympiastadion Berlin, the Olympic Stadium of Berlin, was built between 1934 and 1936 for the 1936 Olympic Games, in the Westend district in the west of the city. It is part of a large sports complex, the former Reichssportfeld, planned by the Nazi regime as a propaganda showcase. At those Games, the American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals, and a street next to the stadium bears his name.
The stone architecture, with massive columns and a ring of stands partially sunk into the ground, is typical of the period. The stadium underwent a major renovation for the 2006 World Cup, when it received a roof that protects almost all the stands while keeping an opening on the west side, the Marathon Gate, from which the Glockenturm, the bell tower, can be seen.
With more than 70,000 seats, it is the stadium of Hertha BSC, the city's football club, and hosts every year the final of the German Cup. In 2006 it was the venue for the World Cup final between Italy and France. It also hosts concerts and athletics competitions.
Outside match days and events, the stadium can be visited on your own or on guided tours, which show areas such as the dressing rooms. An exhibition explains the history of the place, including its political use during Nazism.
