About Mauerpark
Mauerpark, the "Park of the Wall", occupies a strip of land where the Berlin Wall once ran, between Prenzlauer Berg, which was on the eastern side, and Wedding, on the western side. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, residents began planting trees on the site, and the park opened in 1994, being expanded several times since then.
There is still a section of the inner wall, the so-called rear border wall, on the top of the park's grassy hill. Today it is covered in graffiti and is one of the places where street artists can paint.
The park fills up on Sundays. A large flea market sells furniture, second-hand clothing, records, East German items and street food. On Sunday afternoons in the warmer months, the park's stone amphitheatre usually hosts an outdoor karaoke that draws hundreds of people in the audience. Street musicians spread out across the lawn.
Next to it is the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark, a sports complex, and Bernauer Straße, where the Wall memorial is located, is just a few minutes' walk away. On ordinary days the park is a peaceful local space, with swings and a climbing wall.
